SUMMARY:The Gowanus Canal Cleanup: A Community Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the ongoing cleanup of the Gowanus Canal from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency representatives and elected officials. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Gowanus Canal is one of the most polluted bodies of water in the United States — but did you know that there is work being done to clean it up? \nIn 2013\, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency approved a plan to remove polluted material from the Canal and address other sources of pollution along its banks\, including three former manufactured-gas plant sites\, along with upgrades to the city’s sewer system. The cleanup work\, which began in November 2020\, is expected to cost more than $1.5 billion dollars. \nOn June 30\, the Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group (CAG) invites members of the greater Gowanus community to attend a Town Hall meeting and learn more about the cleanup of the Canal under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund Program. \nRepresentatives from the EPA’s cleanup team and the CAG will be there to talk about: \n\nWhy the canal got so polluted in the first place\nWhat the cleanup will change about the Canal\nWhat’s happening today\, with clean up activities currently underway\nWhat the canal might look like when the cleanup is complete\nHow the community can get involved in the cleanup\nAnd more!\n\nThe focus of the Town Hall will be on answering your questions. Please RSVP for the event\, and share your questions in advance at gowanuscag@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Public Meeting for New York New Jersey Harbor and Tributaries Study
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)\, New York District\, in cooperation with non-federal sponsors the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection\, has announced a public meeting for the New York New Jersey Harbor and Tributaries (NYNJHAT) Study on February 27\, 2020 in Rockaway Park\, Queens. \nAccording to USACE\, the coastal storm risk management study covers the New York and New Jersey Harbor and tidally affected tributaries encompassing all of New York City\, the Hudson River north to Troy; the lower Passaic\, Hackensack\, Rahway\, and Raritan Rivers; and the Upper and Lower Bays of New York Harbor\, Newark\, Jamaica\, Raritan and Sandy Hook Bays; the Kill Van Kull\, Arthur Kill and East River tidal straits; and western Long Island Sound. \nThe study is authorized by a 1955 law that directs the examination of damages in coastal and tidal areas due to coastal storms\, such as hurricanes\, “and of possible means of preventing loss of human lives and damages to property\, with due consideration of the economics of proposed breakwaters\, seawalls\, dikes\, dams\, and other structures\, warning services\, or other measures which might be required.” \nAt the meeting\, the USACE will update stakeholders and the public on tasks underway since the release of an interim report in February\, 2019.  One key task is the development of new preliminary data from USACE hydrodynamic modeling\, which identifies possible induced flooding extents\, including the Rockaway area\, and consideration of measures to minimize\, avoid or mitigate any and all induced flooding that may result from conceptual alternatives.
