SUMMARY:Gowanus Canal CAG Archaeology & Historic Preservation Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group’s Archaeology and Historic Preservation Committee will hold its September  meeting on Monday\, August 31st\, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.\, via Zoom video conference. Please note we’ll be meeting one week early than normal\, since the first Monday of September is also Labor Day. \nYou can join the Zoom meeting here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/9808972869?omn=86057492034 \nMeeting ID: 980 897 2869 \nAgenda \n1. Follow up with Celeste and Jason re: how to publish StoryMap on the CAG Website. Aaron said GRT approved this. \n2. There are other materials including images of the dredged items that could also be shared. We already know these materials can be shared as we shared them at the show in April 2025. How do we want to share these? Website\, posters? Work with outreach. \n3. Joan reported that the Clinton and Union Street library is scheduled to reopen in the fall. What would an email to the library say? Library should be very interested in the StoryMap. Follow up with GRT – Aaron will let us know if the StoryMap can be shared with BPL. \n4. Can the StoryMap also be in book form? \n5. Follow up with Aaron as to whether GRT still has the original draft StoryMap that was much more geared to kids. It would be nice to have both. \n6. Joan shared her PowerPoint of the graffiti materials. Eventually we want a show at the Gowanus Dredgers Boathouse with real items dredged and the graffiti materials\, but it would be great if we could show the StoryMap\, too. Aaron will follow up.  If we cannot move all of John Quadrozzi’s items to the location\, we could use the photos we have of them already. Just need frames. \n7. How can this committee raise money or can it come from GRT? See Brian Carr’s email. \n8. Follow up with Michael – did he reach out to John Quadrozzi? \n9. Jason suggested posters with QR codes and flyers – can the Trust help? Aaron to check. If we get the flyers it would be nice to frame them and have them hung in new spaces. \nAll Gowanus CAG meetings are open to the public\, unless specifically noted otherwise.

SUMMARY:Gowanus Canal CAG Water Quality & Technical Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group’s Water Quality/Technical Committee will hold its September monthly meeting a week earlier than usual\, on Monday\, August 31st\, 2026 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.\, via Zoom video conference\, as the usual first Monday of the month coincides with Labor Day. \nYou can join the Zoom meeting here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/9808972869?omn=82453120001 \nMeeting ID: 980 897 2869 \nAgenda \n1) Review emails and responses so far and decide whether to send follow up questions on some: \na. Real-time canal monitoring/public reporting DEP – Alicia West this may deserve a resolution and a presentation – We will have a presentation from Riverkeeper at the General CAG meeting in September when they have more info from DEP as to what they are planning to do. Joan followed up with Alicia 7/29. The City has asked for leave to appeal to the Court of Appeals so the standard response was received that the agency cannot comment on pending litigation. \nb. Bond-Lorraine Sewer – DEP Alicia West – See the relevant section of her July 31 response below. Basically – The DEP’s plan is to re-sewer all of Carroll Gardens/Gowanus\, from Court Street to the Canal\, and from Douglass St to 4th St at Public Place. It will eliminate the old brick Bond-Loraine sewer\, including the section under Public Place\, and that work will be DEP work\, not developer work. Appears DEP will run the sewage from Smith to the canal northwards to the Pumping Station\, while they run the storm water from that area south where it will be dumped into the canal at Public Place. Design planned to go to DDC by year’s end. \nc. CSO’s – DEP Alicia West\, EPA Victoria Sacks – We got an answer from DEP regarding its LTCP. See below for full answer but importantly there is no LTCP for the CSO tank results and re-dredging would only happen if EPA orders it. At that point\, DEP and other PRPs would be required to dredge. IDK what other PRP’s we are talking about. EPA’s Tom Mongelli responded. Mark Yarish prepared some questions that Joan sent to Tom Mongelli on 8/9/2026. Questions about whether the LTCP will be updated to address the change in water quality status should be directed to NYSDEC. Though there is no particular amount of sediment that would trigger a re-dredging\, there are a few other triggers. Under EPA’s ROD\, there are several recontamination limits based on environmental sediment quality that would be the trigger for maintenance dredging. The most notable trigger is sediment exceeding 20 ppm of PAHs. EPA is requiring the City to perform sampling to monitor sediment quality. In a letter dated March 30\, 2026\, EPA notified the City of the completion of capping in RTA1. Under the terms of the 2021 UAO\, the City will have one year from the date of that letter to begin in-canal sediment sampling. \nd. NAPL leaks and remediation at the head of the Canal – Joan followed up to obtain Victoria’s answers to our questions (below) that Tom Mongelli read out at the CAG meeting 7/27 (see below). It seems a lot of what is going on is based on suspicion of what is going on but is also exploratory if EPA has it wrong. Work is in progress. Victoria’s full response is below. \n2) Housekeeping: \na. PowerHouse walkway at TB1. No update. \nb. Mounding: We will follow on the mounding studies once EPA presents on them again. Issue is forward looking – climate change. No update yet. \nc. DO Levels: Any acknowledgement from Fagel\, Waldron or Smith to our resolution re: DO levels\, Erica? NOT YET – 8/3/2026 Erica followed up. \nd. OMP: What is EPA’s demand for responsible parties to maintain an operation and maintenance plan (OMP) for the Gowanus Canal Clean-up strategy? Who will ensure that the OMP is done going forward? Will EPA continue to check that the water quality remains good and that the cap is intact? Does EPA have an OMP Plan? Where is it? Will follow with Katia at next meeting. Katia was not present. We will follow up. \ne. Hydrology – Aaron responded (see below) that DEC hopes to have the survey complete by 1st Q 2027. Current hydraulic conditions\, including groundwater elevations and flow direction. DEC study. We know they are not including toxins in the study. \nSuggestion – overlay the map. – Now that Jason has created a tool\, can DEC use it once its survey is done? Can we use it? If DEC does not want to use our tool\, can we layer their survey results into our map? \n3) Future or today? \na. Has DEP started to measure how much of first flush the new buildings are capturing? We did not cover this yet \nb. Did the scientific projections in the LTCP account for the results of climate change? We eventually will ask questions about this. \nAll Gowanus CAG meetings are open to the public\, unless specifically noted otherwise.

SUMMARY:Gowanus Canal CAG Archaeology & Historic Preservation Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group’s Archaeology and Historic Preservation Committee will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday\, October 5th\, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.\, via Zoom video conference. \nYou can join the Zoom meeting here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/9808972869?omn=82995818449 \nMeeting ID: 980 897 2869 \n1. Follow up with Celeste and Jason re: how to publish StoryMap on CAG Website. Aaron said GRT approved this. \n2. There are other materials including images of the dredged items that could also be shared. We already know these materials can be shared as we shared them at the show last April 2025.  How do we want to share these?  Website\, posters?  Work with outreach and GRT – we need frames.  Em has a bunch.  Need to look at size of photos we already have. \n3. Joan reported that Clinton and Union St library scheduled to open in the fall. What would an email to the library say?  Library should be very interested in the StoryMap.  Follow up with GRT – Aaron will let us know if the StoryMap can be shared with BPL. \n4. Can the Story Map also be in book form? Ask Aaron K if he found out.  Follow with Aaron as to whether GRT still has the original draft Story Map that was much more geared to kids.  It would be nice to have both. \n5. Joan shared her PowerPoint of the graffiti materials. Eventually we want a show at Dredgers with real items dredged and the graffiti materials but would be great if we could show the Story Map\, too.  Aaron will follow up.  If we cannot move all of Quadrozzi’s items to the location we could use the photos we have of them already.  Michael emailed John.  What if we have to move large pieces for a show?  Can GRT pay for a U-Haul? \n6. How can this committee raise money or can it come from GRT? See Brian Carr’s email below. \n7.Jason suggested posters with QR codes to and flyers – can the Trust help? Aaron to check.  If we get the flyers it would be nice to frame and have hung in new spaces.  Working with Outreach and Facilitation on this – what would it cost? \n8. Make sites along the Gowanus into commemorative sites. He suggests the 1st St Turning Basin could be named Marylander Park because the Maryland contingent defended the Revolution from Old Stone House to that site.  There is currently a letter of support from Kim at the Old Stone House.  It would be tied to the Path of Freedom concept from Old Stone House.  Also\, the education building we think is planned there could recall Denton’s Mill which used to sit at the 1st Street TB. \nAll Gowanus CAG meetings are open to the public\, unless specifically noted otherwise.

SUMMARY:Gowanus Canal CAG Water Quality & Technical Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group’s Water Quality/Technical Committee will hold its October monthly meeting on Monday\, October 5th\, 2026 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.\, via Zoom video conference. \nYou can join the Zoom meeting here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/9808972869?omn=88094846131 \nMeeting ID: 980 897 2869 \n1. Open Issues \na. Seal Gas line at Huntington and other NAPL leaks \nb. TB 1 Request presentation of completed design and Reso regarding naming – Marylander Basin\, Denton’s Mill. \nc. Ingress/Egress \nd. Mounding: We will follow up on the mounding studies – Has EPA done a new one? If so\, present on it again. Issue is forward-looking – climate change. \n2. Housekeeping \na. PowerHouse walkway at TB1. No update \nb. DO Levels: Any acknowledgement from Fagel\, Waldron or Smith to our resolution re: DO levels\, Erica?  NOT YET – 8/3/2026 Erica followed up. \nc. \nd. Jason shared with Aaron. \n3. Review emails and responses so far and decide whether to send follow up questions on some \na. Real-time canal monitoring/public reporting – waiting on Court of Appeals. No action. Summary of decision below. Mike Dulong presented at General CAG 9/22/2026. \nb. Bond-Lorraine Sewer – DEP Alicia West – Appears DEP will run the sewage from Smith to the canal northwards to the Pumping Station\, while they run the storm water from that area south where it will be dumped into the canal at Public Place. Design planned to go to DDC by year’s end. 9/16 Joan sent questions to DEP – no response yet. Andrea said at the General CAG meeting that north-flowing CSO pipe will be (obviously) underground and will flow down\, not uphill\, and will not empty into the flushing tunnel. Awaiting DEP confirmation. There is no amount of sediment that would trigger a re-dredging\, but there are other triggers.  Under EPA’s ROD\, there are several recontamination limits based on environmental sediment quality that would be the trigger for maintenance dredging.  The most notable trigger is sediment exceeding 20 ppm of PAHs.  March 30\, 2026\, EPA notified the City of the completion of capping in RTA1. Under the terms of the 2021 UAO\, the City will have one year from the date of that letter to begin in-canal sediment sampling.  The text of the letter is below.  We are awaiting a schedule from the City. Victoria’s full response is below but at the 9/22 CAG meeting she indicated there is bulging at the bulkhead so they are re-evaluating the plan. \n4:  Future or today? \na. Has DEP started to measure how much of first flush the new buildings are capturing?  We did not cover this yet. \nb. Did the scientific projections in the LTCP account for the results of climate change?  We eventually will ask questions about this. \nAll Gowanus CAG meetings are open to the public\, unless specifically noted otherwise.

DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group’s Archaeology and Historic Preservation Committee will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday\, November 2nd\, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.\, via Zoom video conference. \nYou can join the Zoom meeting here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/9808972869?omn=83671834975 \nAgenda \n1. Follow up with Celeste and Jason re how to publish StoryMap on CAG Website. GRT approved this and Aaron reports that he reached out to Celeste about how to share it. \n2. There are other materials including images of the dredged items that could also be shared. We already know these materials can be shared as we shared them at the show last April 2025.  Will work with Outreach and GRT to see if we can get some petty cash for printing flyers\, images and frames.   Em has a bunch of frames that appear to be the right size.  Size of photos printouts would be 11 x 17.   In order to have the 3D items Dredgers\, GCC and Quadrozzi would have to get on board.  Irene will check with Terri Thompson and Joan will follow with Michael. \n3. There is an idea floating to do a Gowanus exhibit at the PowerHouse. Will work with Constanza Valenzuela Associate Curator\, Powerhouse Arts\, Pam Wong Curator at Dredgers. \n4. Joan reported that Clinton and Union St library scheduled to open in the fall. Library will open December 1\, 2026.  I have a November 16\, 2026 Zoom meeting with Michael Fieni at BPL to pitch our ideas.  Help me put together an agenda. \n5. Once the library opens\, we should tour. \n6. Awaiting info from Aaron as to whether StoryMap can be shared with BPL. \n7. Can the Story Map also be in book form? Aaron to follow as to whether GRT still has the original draft Story Map that was much more geared to kids.  It would be nice to have both the electronic version and a kids book version.  Followed with Aaron K and awaiting an answer as to whether Chronicle Heritage can do that. \n8. Joan shared her PowerPoint of the graffiti materials. Joan followed up with Celeste said yes we can do a show at Dredgers with real items dredged and the graffiti materials.  If we cannot move all of Quadrozzi’s items to the location we could use the photos we have of them already.  Michael emailed John.  Aaron to find out if we have to move large pieces for a show\, can GRT pay for a U-Haul?  Need to pin down a date. \n9. Discussed how can this committee raise money or can it come from GRT? Brian is gone so he cannot help but Aaron suggested we come up with a budget. \n10. Jason suggested posters with QR codes to and flyers – can the Trust help? Aaron to check.  If we get the flyers it would be nice to hang in new spaces – also would be nice to hang images of the dredged items in those spaces.  Working with Outreach and Facilitation on this – what would it cost? \n11. We need to put together proposals for funding – Event name\, Date\, Time\, need X$ for promotion. Set up a meeting w/GRT and Chronicle Heritage. \n12. Make sites along the Gowanus into commemorative sites. Eymund suggested at the last meeting that the 1st St Turning Basin could be named Marylander Park because the Maryland contingent defended the Revolution from Old Stone House to that site.  There is currently a letter of support from Kim at the Old Stone House.  It would be tied to the Path of Freedom concept from Old Stone House.  Also\, the education building we think is planned there could recall Denton’s Mill which used to sit at the 1st St TB. SUMMARY:Gowanus Canal CAG Water Quality & Technical Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group’s Water Quality/Technical Committee will hold its November monthly meeting on Monday\, November 2nd\, 2026 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.\, via Zoom video conference. \nYou can join the Zoom meeting here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/9808972869?omn=89344822562 \nAgenda \n1. Bond-Lorraine Sewer abandonment and how the proposed initial design of the high-level sewer lines to take the street runoff will ultimately result in a LOT of disruption in the neighborhood. Katia reported that the last time DEP did work on Columbia Street in 1975 or so\, many buildings collapsed and people died. \n2. Gas line at Huntington and other NAPL leaks. Per Katia\, there were all these special sealants that were not so impenetrable on the bulkheads. \na. NAPL leak at head of the Canal – no action at the moment as EPA is still figuring out what is going on there – EPA said the bulkhead is bulging. Katia noted that wouldn’t National Grid be responsible for paying for the leak since the coal tar has migrated from the MGP site (Fulton at Thomas Greene Park) under the Canal and over to the east side where the NAPL leak is (next to the flushing tunnel at Butler Street). Per Aaron\, the GRT is the party responsible for that location. The closure sheet capping the bulkhead there did not go down all the way and that is what Aaron believes is the source of the sheening. They were going to do supplemental grouting but that approach is not effective\, so they are now figuring out a different solution per Victoria. If there is historic contamination from the Fulton site or other activities in the area\, that exposure pathway is going to be sealed. Joan showed Irene on Google Maps the area that we are discussing\, and she will look into whether Fulton is involved. \nb. Gas line going across Public Place from west to east at Huntington needs to be sealed. We asked Irene if that would be sealed by National Grid because it still supplies Red Hook. Brian at the General CAG meeting acknowledged the Gas Tunnel – design discussions between EPA\, GRT and National Grid to address sealing around that infrastructure before cleanup can happen in that area. The bulkheads have to go in before any of that can happen and EPA is in charge of sequencing that. \nAlso\, NAPL leaking into the Canal at Huntington. Is National Grid going to seal that up? Question sent to Victoria\, what party is dealing with the bulkhead at the street end at Huntington\, the City or a developer. \nc. Katia – Have they ever dredged around 3rd St Bridge pylons? Aaron responded – RTA 1 substantially complete – odds and ends remaining like 1st Street turning basin and the leak at the head of the canal. As for 3rd Street dredging around the pylons he thinks that may be addressed in the RTA 2 design.  Joan sent that question to Victoria. \nd. Joan asked how many third party bulkheads are not done? Eight to nine properties including the 7th Street turning basin. \n3. Turning Basin 1 – Request presentation of completed design – Aaron said that by end of year we will have a 90% design presentation (per Facilitation Committee that is happening at the October General CAG – sent email to Victoria and Natalie to confirm since it is on the October agenda). Resolution regarding naming – Marylander Basin\, Denton’s Mill. Discussed re-naming and Aaron suggested that should be addressed to the Parks Department or Community Board 6. \n4. Ingress/Egress: Aaron says in terms of the bulkheads designed by GRT\, its responsibility is narrowly focused on the remedy – only purpose from a legal standpoint is to support the uplands banks. GRT has no liberty to add bells and whistles like ladders\, docks\, chains. Bulkheads are not owned by the GRT; they are owned by the property owners. There is no requirement by the City to add those things so need legislation from City Council. Joan asked Brian via email where the point of egress on Bond Street is that he referred to. \n5. Mounding: GRT did the last mounding study. We’d like to see the new one. Aaron said study is done with the corresponding design. Joan followed up by email reminding Aaron to look into whether there is a new mounding study. \n6. Housekeeping \na) PowerHouse walkway at Turning Basin 1.  No update. \nb) Dissolved Oxygen Levels: Need to follow up with Erica (not at this meeting) re: DEC response to CAG resolution re: DO levels \nc) Operation and Maintenance Plan: What is EPA’s demand for responsible parties to maintain an operation and maintenance plan (OMP) for the Gowanus Canal Clean-up strategy? Who will ensure that the OMP is done going forward? Will EPA continue to check that the water quality remains good and that the cap is intact? Does EPA have an OMP Plan? Where is it?  Nothing yet. \nd) Hydrology – Aaron responded (see below) that DEC hopes to have the survey complete by 1st Quarter 2027. Jason shared his map tool with Aaron to see if they can be combined. \n7. Review emails and responses so far and decide whether to send follow up questions on some \na) Real-time canal monitoring/public reporting – waiting on Court of Appeals. No action. Summary of decision below. Mike Dulong presented at General CAG 9/22/2026. \nb) CSOs – Joan reported out answer from DEP regarding its Long-Term Control Plan. See below for full answer but importantly there is no LTCP for the CSO tank results and re-dredging would only happen if EPA orders it. At that point\, DEP and other PRPs would be required to dredge.  March 30\, 2026\, EPA notified the City of the completion of capping in RTA1. Under the terms of the 2021 UAO\, the City will have one year from the date of that letter to begin in-canal sediment sampling. We are awaiting a schedule from the City. \nc) NAPL leaks and remediation at the head of the Canal – Joan followed up to obtain Victoria’s answers to our questions (below) that Tom Mongelli read out at the CAG meeting 7/27 (see below). It seems a lot of what is going on is based on suspicion of what is going on but is also exploratory if EPA has it wrong. Work is in progress. Victoria’s full response is below but at the 9/22 CAG meeting she indicated there is bulging at the bulkhead so they are re-evaluating the plan. Irene to follow up regarding the Gas Pipe and re: NAPL at Canal Head. \nd)  Other issues \n– Has DEP started to measure how much of first flush the new buildings are capturing? We did not cover this yet. \n– Did the scientific projections in the LTCP account for the results of climate change?  We eventually will ask questions about this. \n– Bond-Lorraine Sewer – Katia feels that it is very important DEP Alicia West – Appears DEP will run the sewage from Smith to the canal northwards to the Pumping Station\, while they run the storm water from that area south where it will be dumped into the canal at Public Place. Design planned to go to DDC by year’s end. 9/16 Joan sent questions to DEP.  Andrea said\, at the General CAG meeting that the north flowing CSO pipe will be (obviously) underground and will flow down\, not uphill\, and will not empty into the flushing tunnel. Another long discussion about Bond-Lorraine map. Will the streets be torn up everywhere there is an arrow on that map? We definitely ultimately want a community presentation. Wrote to Alicia and discussed with Alicia after this meeting. Supposedly CB6 has asked\, GOTF has asked\, we have now asked\, too. She will get back to me. I will follow up with her. \nAll Gowanus CAG meetings are open to the public\, unless specifically noted otherwise.
