Gowanus Canal CAG Archaeology & Historic Preservation Committee Meeting

October 5 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group’s Archaeology and Historic Preservation Committee will hold its regular monthly meeting on Monday, October 5th, 2026 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., via Zoom video conference.

You can join the Zoom meeting here: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/9808972869?omn=82995818449

Meeting ID: 980 897 2869

1. Follow up with Celeste and Jason re: how to publish StoryMap on CAG Website. Aaron said GRT approved this.

2. There are other materials including images of the dredged items that could also be shared. We already know these materials can be shared as we shared them at the show last April 2025.  How do we want to share these?  Website, posters?  Work with outreach and GRT – we need frames.  Em has a bunch.  Need to look at size of photos we already have.

3. Joan reported that Clinton and Union St library scheduled to open in the fall. What would an email to the library say?  Library should be very interested in the StoryMap.  Follow up with GRT – Aaron will let us know if the StoryMap can be shared with BPL.

4. Can the Story Map also be in book form? Ask Aaron K if he found out.  Follow with Aaron as to whether GRT still has the original draft Story Map that was much more geared to kids.  It would be nice to have both.

5. Joan shared her PowerPoint of the graffiti materials. Eventually we want a show at Dredgers with real items dredged and the graffiti materials but would be great if we could show the Story Map, too.  Aaron will follow up.  If we cannot move all of Quadrozzi’s items to the location we could use the photos we have of them already.  Michael emailed John.  What if we have to move large pieces for a show?  Can GRT pay for a U-Haul?

6. How can this committee raise money or can it come from GRT? See Brian Carr’s email below.

7.Jason suggested posters with QR codes to and flyers – can the Trust help? Aaron to check.  If we get the flyers it would be nice to frame and have hung in new spaces.  Working with Outreach and Facilitation on this – what would it cost?

8. Make sites along the Gowanus into commemorative sites. He suggests the 1st St Turning Basin could be named Marylander Park because the Maryland contingent defended the Revolution from Old Stone House to that site.  There is currently a letter of support from Kim at the Old Stone House.  It would be tied to the Path of Freedom concept from Old Stone House.  Also, the education building we think is planned there could recall Denton’s Mill which used to sit at the 1st Street TB.

All Gowanus CAG meetings are open to the public, unless specifically noted otherwise.
