The Gowanus Canal Community Advisory Group\u2019s\u00a0Land Use\u00a0Committee met on Tuesday, April\u00a04, 2017,\u00a0in the offices of the Gowanus Canal Conservancy at 543 Union Street.<\/p>\n
Committee Members present:\u00a0David Briggs, Rita Miller, Andrea Parker,\u00a0Peter Reich,\u00a0Triada Samaras, Sue Wolfe, Maryann Young<\/p>\n
Item 1<\/strong><\/p>\n Could the 7th Street and Lowe’s turning basins become salt marshes? After some discussion, it was agreed that they should be included in the list of areas that the NRDA trustees consider for restoration.<\/p>\n Action<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n The committee will compile a list of areas and contact the trustees.<\/p>\n Item 2<\/strong><\/p>\n Questions from committee member: \u201cWhat are salt marshes?\u201d and “Do they increase mosquito populations\/problems possibly posing a problem for residents nearby?\u201d Answer: Salt marshes support different types of plants, fish, birds, and invertebrates.<\/p>\n Action<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n More research required on the mosquito issue.<\/p>\n Item 3<\/strong><\/p>\n Carl Alderson of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the waterfront planning person for the Department of City Planning will be invited to the next committee meeting.<\/p>\n Action<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Andrea will invite both individuals.<\/p>\n Item 4<\/strong><\/p>\n A list of public and private land\/waterways that could be considered for ecological restoration under the NRDA was developed. Sites include the Salt Lot, all turning basins, street ends, extension of the 4th Street turning basin east of 3rd Avenue, Long Bank Park (behind Home Depot), Lowe’s parking lot, and the former Pathmark site.<\/p>\n Action<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
