Attendees: Joan Salome-Rodriguez: Moderator. Katia Kelly, Jason Schwartzman: CAG members. Irene Baker: National Grid. Aaron Kaufman: Gowanus Remediation Trust.
1. Follow up with Celeste and Jason re: how to publish StoryMap on CAG Website. GRT approved this and Aaron reports that he reached out to Celeste about how to share it.
2. There are other materials including images of the dredged items that could also be shared. We already know these materials can be shared as we shared them at the show last April 2025. Will work with Outreach and GRT to see if we can get some petty cash for printing flyers, images and frames. Em has a bunch of frames and Joan followed up about the size. Size of photos printouts would be 11 x 17. In order to have the 3D items Gowanus Dredgers, Gowanus Canal Conservancy, and John Quadrozzi would have to get on board. Irene will check with Terri Thompson and Joan will follow up with Michael. Just found out from Peter in a separate call (he was in Maryland when we had this meeting) that there is an idea floating around to do a Gowanus exhibit at PowerHouse. Will work with Constanza Valenzuela, Associate Curator, Powerhouse Arts, Pam W., Curator, and Sasha Fishman, Powerhouse Artist-In-Residence ’26-’27, Columbia Sculpture MFA ’24, sashafishman.com.
3. Joan reported that Clinton and Union Street library scheduled to open in the fall. Katia reached out to the former manager of the Clinton Street library, Uldis Skrovelis, and he can put us in touch with the Friends of the Carroll Gardens Library. Ginger Gaines is the President of Friends of Carroll Gardens Library. Expectation is that library will open in late November or early December and we could tour. Library should be very interested in the StoryMap. Awaiting info from Aaron as to whether StoryMap can be shared with the Brooklyn Public Library.
4. Can the StoryMap also be in book form? Aaron to follow up as to whether GRT still has the original draft StoryMap that was much more geared to kids. It would be nice to have both the electronic version and a kids book version. Aaron to follow up to see if Chronicle Heritage can do that.
5. Joan shared her PowerPoint of the graffiti materials. Joan followed up with Celeste in August and again in September. Eventually we want a show at Dredgers with real items dredged and the graffiti materials, but it would be great if we could show the StoryMap, too. Aaron will follow up. If we cannot move all of John Quadrozzi’s items to the location, we could use the photos we have of them already. Michael emailed John. Aaron to find out if we have to move large pieces for a show, whether GRT can pay for a U-Haul.
6. Discussed how this committee can raise money or can it come from GRT? See Brian Carr’s email below.
7. Jason suggested posters with QR codes and flyers – can the Trust help? Aaron to check. If we get the flyers, it would be nice to hang in new spaces – also would be nice to hang images of the dredged items in those spaces. Working with Outreach and Facilitation on this – what would it cost?
8. We need to put together proposals for funding – Event name, Date, Time, need X$ for promotion. Brian Carr emailed (see below) that he would help set up a meeting.
9. Make sites along the Gowanus into commemorative sites. Eymund suggested at the last meeting that the 1st Street Turning Basin could be named Marylander Park because the Maryland contingent defended the Revolution from the Old Stone House to that site. There is currently a letter of support from Kim at the Old Stone House. It would be tied to the Path of Freedom concept from Old Stone House. Also, the education building we think is planned there could recall Denton’s Mill, which used to sit at the 1st Street Turning Basin. Aaron said that would probably be proposed to the Parks Department and Council Member Hanif.

The Trust is required to do archaeology and preservation related work to conserve and display artifacts, and to make up for impacts to the historic fabric of the canal.
As EPA has noted, the regulations do not allow us to order the PRPs to create a new museum, but other preservation things short of that are permitted.
Happy to discuss with the committee and the Trust folks at a meeting.

Is there money to help the projects? Particularly QR code stuff. We can work with Arts Gowanus as we have in the past. I can discuss with WestMark but not sure they have esplanade. All good ideas but we do run into a funding wall.

Hi Joan,
Hope you are well.
Thought I would reach out regarding an Archaeology Committee topic. I’m not sure what the committee’s progress on things is at, but wanted to share a thought.
The new sculptures that have just come to Gowanus have gotten a lot of attention. It may be that developers are getting more interested in the esplanades. With that in mind, it might be possible to approach some of them about accepting some salvaged items like bollards to incorporate into the esplanades.
It might even be possible that someone is interested in providing some display space on a ground floor for smaller objects.
Another suggestion is for displaying smaller objects in a mini-museum kiosk, maybe something like this:
https://www.publicartarchive.org/art/Really-Small-Museum-ECO/1cc7774c
Another thought is to make QR code stickers or plaques that can be placed periodically around the canal that link to the historic timelime webpage.
Happy to discuss at a meeting about facilitating such things.
Have a good weekend!

Hi John,
My name is Michael Kilian, I’m Linda Mariano’s son-in-law. I’m part of the Gowanus CAG Archaeology Committee and I just wanted to help out here to follow up on this – is there a time that a few of us could visit the container to take some photos of the items? As Joan explained previously we are working towards displaying them at some point.
Let us know, thanks!
Michael

Hi, Mr. Quadrozzi:
I am following up on our emails of a few weeks ago about a visit to the container to refresh our recollections and take photos of the items there as we work towards how to arrange displaying them at some point. I hope we can arrange something either this or next week.
As I wrote in a separate email chain, Linda Mariano was a dear friend and neighbor – she lived across the street from me. We spoke almost every day. I miss her and Joe terribly. Sorry for the confusion about the other Linda.
I look forward to hearing from you.

When would work for you, Mr. Quadrozzi? We can figure out how to work around your schedule. Most mornings (except Thursdays) are good for me as is early afternoon.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly!
Are we speaking about Linda LaViolette? I am in touch with her. I will follow up on that!
Both Thursday and Friday afternoons of this week are good for me. Peter? John?

Hi Joan,
Sure, lmk some dates and times.
Note that there was discussion on potentially setting up a display kiosk made from sea containers with glass for public visibility to be an installation at GBX™~Gowanus Bay Terminal – Columbia St. Warft – on the edge of industry!
As Linda was always the communication conduit, and it’s been some time since we lost her lovely self, please lmk where the discussion has gone.
Thank QUE !

Good evening Mr. Quadrozzi:
I am reaching out on behalf of the Gowanus Community Advisory Group’s Archeology Committee. Peter and I would very much like to visit your space to photograph the items in the storage unit that have been on your property for quite some time now. I came down once before with a group from Pratt but this time we really would like to assess what is there, whether we have the capacity to move any of it for display (with your permission, of course) and make sure we have good photos of the objects.
I hope that you can let me know when would be a good time to visit.
Thanks so much,
Joan Salome-Rodriguez
Moderator, Archeology Committee.
